"Sewing a wound with hair from a horse's tail ... delivering a baby by the roadside and washing it from a puddle ... treating snakebite in the bush ... it was all in the day's work for young Dr Joy Seager and she was likely to be paid i pigs and potatoes. Life on Kangaroo Island was hard at the best of times and money became tight during the 1930s.
She went there in 1926, at the age of twenty-seven, because the islanders wanted a woman doctor. they were fed up with male doctors after a succession of no-hopers. Joy, fresh out of medical school, accepted the challenge ... after looking at a map and tracking down Kangaroo Island off the coast of South Australia."
