“Dannatt’s distinguished career in the army began with the Green Howards in Northern Ireland, where at the age of twenty-two he was awarded the Military Cross for anti-terrorist operations. He has served in theatres from Cyprus to Germany, Bosnia to Kosovo. He commanded the NATO Allied Rapid Reaction Corps and led the army during its operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. As chief of the general staff, he challenged Tony Blair and Gordon Brown by his public criticism of their commitment to the British missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the imbalance of the military covenant between the nation and the soldier. In 2008 he oversaw Prince Harry’s deployment to Afghanistan.”
