“The letters were written as entries for two ‘Letters to the Queen’ contests. The first, held in Vermont, Victoria, attracted such an impressive flow of entries that the decision to use some in a book arose quite naturally. The second contest, covering a much wider area, was started in order ort collect as many entries as possible. The response was overwhelming. The judges and editors had the tormenting task of considering about 1500 entries. So many letters and illustrations seemed to merit inclusion that it was hard to trim them down to a manageable number. The final selection shows that Australian children regard the Queen in much the same way as the rest of us, but without our inhibitions on the subject.”
