"This book is not written for the Amateur, the Critic, the Theorist or the Antiquarian: It is a wholly technical treatise and an attempt to supply the needs of the earnest music-student; needs which I have studied for over twenty-five years.  To summarise one's own knowledge, to analyse and tabulate the works of the great masters of old, may be very interesting to the cultured reader, but I have found it of very little assistance to the learner."
