“Four more of our Lancasters went down. The Germans had turned up in strength for the big kill. Over the intercom I could hear the navigator logging them. ‘Kite going down starboard quarter.. and another… Lanc going down dead astern.’ What was wrong? Why were we waiting? We continued to circle, acutely conscious of the twelve high explosives bombs lying at our feet. Suddenly, against strict orders, radio-telephone silence was broken and a fear-ridden voice jerked out: ‘Oh, come on – come on – let’s bomb and get to hell out of this!” Then as if to punctuate the words, another Lancaster burst into flames.”
