“The really great wave of museum growth in South Australia began in the late 1950s and 1960s, with an explosion in numbers during the 1970s. In essence, this has been a spontaneous community movement, with ab emphasis on history – nearly all the museums listed in this directory are historical in focus. The State Government participated in this movement by setting up the History Trust of South Australia in 1981. The Trust now runs four excellent museums – The Migration Museum, National Motor Museum, Old Parliament House and the South Australian Maritime Museum – and a Community History Unit, which provides expert advice and funding to museums and historical societies throughout the state.”
