“This is a true story; a story that, remarkably, has never been told.
In 1788, Nanbaree watched the First Fleet sail into Sydney Harbour. Within a year, this six year old Aboriginal boy would be adopted by Surgeon White and become a key figure in the life of the early colony. Nanbaree acted as interpreter for Governor Phillip and his own countrymen. When in history has such a young child had such responsibility and power!
The artist, Thomas Watling, was assigned to illustrate White’s collection of plants and animals. This talented forger also drew delightful portraits of Nanbaree, his family and friends and scenes of their life on Sydney Harbour.
The Watling Collection”, housed in the British Museum of Natural History, is a secret treasure trove, hinted at in history books, now presented for the first time.”
