“Whilst the approach is mainly descriptive, there has been a deliberate attempt to increase the reader’s understanding of geographical concepts and terminology. To this end, explanation is linked with description. Use has been made of the maps, diagrams and photographs, of which there are over one hundred.
A study of the photographs should create in the reader, at least in part, a feeling of being in New Guinea, observing the scenes which are portrayed. The geographer when he undertakes field studies is not content to look casually at the scene but he seeks to describe and, on the basis of his knowledge, to understand and explain what he has observed. The reader should use the photographs in a similar way.”
