“This is the story of Kent Richards, D.Sc., a brilliant young New Zealand scientist, who is sent to India on a most secret mission.
In the opening chapters we find him trying to persuade his wife to accompany him, but Clare, though deeply in love with Kent, has always dreaded India – dreaded it because her twin brother was killed in Calcutta some years before during a native uprising.
Clare, in great distress, begs her husband to reject the assignment, but this he is unable to do because of prior commitments. Kent arrives in Bombay, and on the night before he is due to leave for Bundi, strikes up a conversation with a young Englishman who, as he puts it, has “had” India. During their few hours together, Blamey tells Kent about a notorious French woman known as Marie De Mettre – according to him she is exquisitely beautiful, but, for some unknown reason, refuses to have anything to do with people of her own colour.”
