As a penniless student at the University of Oklahoma, Al Woods was obsessed by two things: food and sex. He never had enough of the first and he never had any of the second. These two deprivations had a lot to do with his decision to join the U.S. Coast Guard shortly before America came into the second world war. The food problem was neatly solved when the service discovered Al's talent for cooking, but the sex problem proved a good deal more knotty. Waterfront encounters, Al discovered, were not the answer. The co-operation of a sturdy girl called Josephine Hill, whom he thought he had left behind for good at the university, seemed to be essential."
