“Port Adelaide was known as “Port Misery” by the early settlers in South Australia, who saw their goods and chattels dumped among the mangrove swamps and had to be carried ashore through the mud. But the port soon became an essential part of the new colony as settlers poured in and wheat, wool, and copper were shipped out, and the scattered buildings around a swampy inlet were the nucleus of a thriving port. Some of the State’s earlies and most historic buildings still stand in and around Port Adelaide, and there are others, built during the nineteenth and early twentieth century, which are linked with the colourful characters of those periods.”
