"Although poster art has its foundations in the distant past, it was not until the second half of the 19th century that the poster assumed its definitive format, still valid today, thanks to the contribution of two great artists, Bonnard and Lautrec. They were outstanding successors of Jules Cheret, the father of the modern poster. With the 20th century expansion of industry and the rise of a vast consumer public, poster art became a powerful propaganda medium. Cappiello remarked that he knew one of his posters was a success when customers asked for Red Horse Chocolate instead of Chocolate Klaus. The author explores the fascinating psychological and aesthetic factors which have influenced the evolution of poster art."
