“From 1930 to 1948 Mr. Ward guided the College through some of its most perplexing years.  The great depression followed by the Second World War and then the immediate post-war problems supplied more than enough difficulties for any one Headmaster to face.
In its earliest days Prince Alfred College had the inspiration of an advanced educationalist in the person of its headmaster, Mr. J. A. Hartley, and in the closing period of its first 80 years, its Headmaster, Mr. J. F. Ward, was in the forefront of educational matters.”
