“One hundred years ago, Frankston was a quiet coastal resort and fishing village which, like so many towns of that era, had its own race club. The Frankston Racecourse, listed by the V.R.C. as early as 1860, was almost certainly on the land now occupied by the Long Island Country Club.
During the first two decades of this century, the property belonged to James Grice. A wealthy merchant, and several times chairman of the V.A.T.C., Grice used the estate for the training and agisting of his own thoroughbreds. In 1925, the newly incorporated Long Island Estates Pty Ltd. Included the former Grice land in its real estate portfolio, and, a few years later, established the fairways and greens of a golf course across and around their racetrack.”
