“German shells burst across the valley, but the Polish troops worked on in unhurried fashion – and so did Voytek, their soldier bear.  They were at the foot of Monte Cassino hauling ammunition to the front line.  Voytek was perfect for the job.  He carried boxes of shells in his huge paws without effort – as long as there was a tit-bit in payment every now and then.  He took sentry duty from a tree at the edge of the gun position and kept cool under fire.”
