“This book first briefly examines the factors which bought about the decision to develop a large tract of Crown Land on Kangaroo Island for the resettlement of ex-servicemen after World War II. Then it discusses the effects of this decision on the lives of the people to be concerned. They responded with enthusiasm to the challenge of developing rugged and infertile land, and they built from nothing a dynamic community. The book goes on to review the way that settlers responded to the great challenge of getting economic return for labour from the land, and to the equally great challenge in their continuing battle with the administration for their entitlements under the War Service Land Settlement Agreement Act of 1945. The years spent struggling with so many problems have had a high cost, and the settlers remaining now prepare for a well-earned retirement.”
