"This tale of pioneer Canada is based upon historic fact.  The chief character is Thayendanegea, an Indian of the Mohawk tribe, who is known also by the name Joseph Brant.
Joseph Brant, while he is yet a boy, seeks to learn other ways than the ways of the forest folk, his people, and wishes to gain the knowledge that lies in books.  Sir William Johnson, Major-General of the British Forces of New York, and the Lady Catherine, his daughter, help Joseph to succeed in his ambition, so that he becomes a proficient scholar and in time a soldier who receives the British title of Captain."
