“Struggle for The North exposes in detail the major causes of economic stagnation in the north of Australia and outlines a vigorous programme for economic development.  The author propounds a severe criticism of political maladministration, misuse of the public estate, ownership patterns in the beef and mineral industries, the effect of overseas absentee land-ownership in causing inadequate animal husbandry, erosion and rape of the land and opposition to urgent transport construction.
A novel feature is his detailed account of the use of Aborigines as an exploited labour force in the cattle industry and the denial of elementary human rights to northern Aborigines.  The book presents for the first time a detailed inventory and analysis of all natural resources – land, water, mineral – which should be of great value to geographers, economists, agricultural scientists, financial institutions and policy-makers.
A special introduction to the volume has been prepared by Bruce McFarlane, Research Fellow in The Australian National University; the foreword is by Alex MacDonald, Secretary of the Queensland Trades and Labour Council and Executive member of The Australian Council of Trade Unions.”
