"Pinocchio, like Alice in Wonderland, is more than a children's fantasy.  To the child mind, the way-wardness and the inevitable punishment of Pinocchio are readily comprehensible issues.  But the book also concerns itself with problems which reach out beyond the horizon of the young.  Collodi was a man of the world and a satirist, vitally concerned with ethics and justice in his own society.  The adult reader could scarcely miss the point when the patient and gentle Gepetto finally overtakes his delinquent son and then, thanks to the interference of a mob, is marched off to jail while the culprit is set free.  Another incident shows Pinocchio committed to prison for having been robbed.  When an amnesty for all criminals is proclaimed, Pinocchio has difficulty in qualifying, and has to assure the jailer that he is, indeed, a true criminal."
