'This handbook is for the amateur collector and discusses types of furniture that he is likely to find and be able to afford. It is not devoted to those fine pieces of furniture that are part of our national heritage, examples of perfection isolated beyond our reach and means in museums and stately homes.
The book is lavishly illustrated with over a hundred black-and-white photographs, as well as twenty-four in colour. The pictures were taken especially for the book under the author's direction, so they amplify the text in a way no pictures of rare museum pieces ever could. If the author knows the inside of a drawer is more informative than the bureau it is part of, it is the drawer that is shown. And, on reading the text, the point of this unglamorous picture is immediately clear.'
