“The fifty-fourth Test series between England and Australia could hardly have taken place in a more auspicious year; not only was 1977 Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee, it was also the Centenary of Test cricket between England and Australia.
Shortly after the Australian touring party arrived in England, news of Kerry Packer’s “Cricket circus” leaked out to the cricket world. Packer’s signing of the majority of the world’s best players to perform in a series of matches during the 1977-78 Australian season, when many of them would be required by their countries to play in official Test series, ensured a head-on confrontation with the international Cricket Conference. With both sides in uncompromising mood the Centenary year looked destined to become a revolutionary one for world cricket.”
