'Max Lancing was a jeweller of repute, whose already extensive business was only the front for a far more profitable trade in illicit diamonds. The insurance company would always cover losses in his legitimate business but when a gang of armed men broke into the shop, held Lancing and his mistress at gun-point and demanded the contents of the safe hidden in the cellar below, his livelihood, indeed his life itself, was put at risk. The safe had a time-lock which could only be over-ridden if Lancing's partner was also present, so for twenty-four hours of intolerable tension intruders and victims confronted each other, first in the cramped quarters of the shop, then in the luxury of Lancing's suburban home.'
