“When the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia called foe a volunteer ophthalmic surgeon to take a trip into the Kimberley cattle-ranching area and report on blindness among Aboriginals, they started something bigger than they knew. It happened that Caroline Gye, a distinguished ophthalmologist, was at a loose end in Australia. A friend nudged her into answering the call. Within a short space of time she, with a physician (young, female, Oxford trained) and a Sanitary Inspector (male, dinkum Aussie), had set out on a full-scale medical adventure into the fascinating drought-ridden interior north of Perth.”
