“Like Marco, the youthful Venetian hero of The Doge’s Ring, its author Daniele Vare was brought up in a Scottish castle.  He has taken some reminiscence of his early boyhood in Scotland and in Venice and has made a fairy-tale out of them, centering round a castle in Spain, that is really a castle in Angus, called Druimbar (the Bar of Dreams), a composite picture of two real places where the author passed part of his early youth.  It was a visit to Scotland at the close of his diplomatic career which stimulated him to write this book.  Thus it is against an entirely authentic background that Marco’s remarkable adventures unfolded.”
