The Handbook of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks

by Geoffrey A. Godden

Herbert Jenkins, 1969, black and white photographic plates, black and white reproduction illustrations, hardcover, dustjacket

Very Good Condition, minor edge and shelf wear, a little rubbing and bumping to edges and corners, no inscriptions; clipped dustjacket shows a little edge and shelf wear with a little rubbing, bumping and chipping, a little creasing, laminate starting to lift in places (see photographs)

“It opens with a unique pictorial glossary, showing the standard types of ceramic bodies and styles of decoration.  Then follows the main section, consisting of all the principal potters (or firms) arranged in alphabetical order.  Each entry reproduces the mark and gives the address, working period and specialty of the firm, and dates each mark within narrow limits; where marks also occur on later reproductions, the reader is warned of the fact.  Illustration of the wares themselves is, of course, outside the present scope, but in many cases references to specific plates in other books enable the reader at a glance the most convenient source of the information he may require.
The final section records over 700 combinations of initials known to have been used as identifying signs by the potters listed, with their working periods.
This is followed by details of over 900 Staffordshire potters, showing their names, addresses and working periods.”
