“There would be few places more typical of an outback Australian town than Pooncarie, of ‘The Port’ as many of the ‘old times’ refer to it. Its main advantage over most other towns is that it is situated on the famous Darling River. Located on high ground, the town was born out of a need to service the requirements of the settlers on the vast pastoral holdings of the area and to act as a port for the paddlesteamers plying the Darling River.
Settlement of the area required people with tenacity and courage which helped them overcome the often hostile semi-arid nature of their surroundings.”
