“This book was founded upon a suggestion, made by a student of Australian literature, for the elaboration of two articles dealing with the early days of C. J. Dennis, which appeared in the Melbourne Herald late in 1943.
the idea then was to produce a brief biographical sketch with emphasis on origins. Early in the enterprise, however, there developed a fresh appreciation of the remarkable skill of Dennis, as manifest not only in his books but in the considerable body of material that remained uncollected; and so, it seemed desirable to expand the discussion into a general review, with special reference to lesser-known writings. Discovery of much interesting documentary material, mainly letters, was another factor in causing the story to expand.”
