“This study was written for use by student attending the Beltana Field Study Centre. It will, however, have a much wider appeal.
Beltana is the Historic Centre of the north of South Australia. Explorers, the pastoral advance, mining, camel transport, the Great Northern Railway, the Overland telegraph, Robert Mitchell of the Inland and John Flynn all have an intimate association with Beltana.
This study is a Settlement Study of the township, how it came to be, how it lived and why it died. It is not the story of pioneers on the land, of dry years and overstocking. The man who pioneered the blacksmith shop and let the Church use his showroom for worship services was as much a pioneer as any man.
Written in 1973, this is a Centenary History.”
