“In this history, the author has traced the development of settlement in the Wellington Valley, discovered by John Oxley in 1817.  A study is made of the convict settlement, the aboriginal mission station, gold discoveries and the development of those deposits, the squatters.  The growth of the town, the development of community projects, the reactions of residents to the demands of two wars, depression, drought and floods form part of a story extending over a period of 150 years.  Part of that history is the attempt to establish the Maryvale/Sandy Hollow railway, the fate of which after 70 years still lies in the balance.”
