'This book gives the information needed for successful establishment of trees in gardens, parks and streets in the region. It reviews the factors involved in the choice of species, planting and disease control. The major part of the book is taken up by descriptions of individual species for various purposes.
The book was prepared before Darwin was devastated by Cyclone Tracy and many of the illustrations are of specimens which have now disappeared. At the same time, it may be reassuring to those whose gardens were destroyed to know that the contrast between the two scenes on the front cover (Nakara Terrace, Casuarina and Mullen Gardens, Alawa) represents four years' growth. The illustrations on the back cover are of Bennet Square and Darwin City.'
