“Wandjuk Marika: Life Story is the autobiography of one of Australia’s greatest indigenous statesmen, artists and religious leaders: champion of Land Rights, poet, singer, a dreamer and outstanding artist.  This major literary work reveals the beauty and integrity of Aboriginal English in an oral narrative which describes Wandjuk’s feelings and observations as he moves between very different worlds – from grandmaster of sacred ceremonies to the political forums and art galleries of the world.
Wandjuk Marika was the custodian of Yalanbara, the sacred Arnhem Land beach at which the Creation Ancestors stepped ashore and gave birth to the first people.  His paintings, most now in major Australian gallery collections, are religious documents.  Like the Book of Genesis, they detail the origin of life and rules for humanity.  Twenty of the paintings are celebrated in full colour in this book.”
