“The author and her artist husband did not go to ‘Black Africa’ to hunt, to convert, to govern, to trade or to meddle with the Africans’ manners and customs.  They went to see and to paint what they saw.  As a consequence, they were able to enjoy the confidence of the peoples of Western Africa to a remarkable extent.  What they experience in the jungle at the courts of medieval ‘kings’ and among the sophisticated and ‘evolved’ Africans of the coastal towns is set down without prejudice and without preconceptions.  During their African sojourn the author had a baby, and he from a very early age took part in his parents’ wanderings – and flourished exceedingly.  The book has colour and movement and the author has a natural gift for interpretation.”
