“Wine-Growers were among the first to clear the bush and till the soil of the Southern Vales of South Australia, the serenely beautiful country south of Adelaide. Men like Walter Reynell found that the Vales were ideal for wine-growing and founded some of South Australia’s first wineries there. The colonists smacked their lips over the result and forecast world-wide fame for the new vineyards: a dream that did not come true, although Australians have enjoyed Southern Vales wines for more than a century.
The names of such men as Reynell, Thomas Hardy, and Ben Chaffey became household words after they established their wineries around McLaren Vale and Reynella. Some of today’s winemakers are descendants of these ‘first families’ of the Australian wine industry, and combine proud traditions with the flair, vision, and business acumen demanded by modern markets.”
