"When Mrs. O'Malley came to Sydney to manage The World Turned Upside Down a rowdy pub in the grim dockland quarter of the city, she considered that she and her children, Walter and Flo, were a cut above her clients. For in the 1880s, the domain between the Rocks and the 'Loo was a tough one, torn by the warfare of two teenage gangs, who roamed and ransacked the streets. It was not long, however, before young Walter was tagging along with the other larrikins of the neighbourhood; and if his youth and gentle appearance kept him out of trouble for a time, it was not for long."
